A Contemporary Funeral Home Symbolizing the Rebirth of Life

Remembrances in Light, designed by You Ruei Lin, is a unique and contemporary funeral home that challenges traditional Chinese styles. Located next to a crematorium, this two-story space reimagines the concept of farewell by utilizing light as a medium to symbolize the rebirth of life.

The funeral cubicles in Remembrances in Light are arranged in a rectangular configuration, allowing mourners to view both the front and rear of the space from the outside. This design choice breaks away from the conventional norms and embraces trendy, contemporary aesthetics. The overall ambiance of the funeral home is solemn and serene, creating a quiet and peaceful environment for remembrance.

The design of Remembrances in Light is characterized by its use of linear visuals and touches of nature. The dark gray metal grille combined with floor-to-ceiling glass at the building facade creates a modern and minimalist appearance. Stepping into the foyer, visitors are greeted by a white marble floor and white arc walls, creating a clean and rich entrance reminiscent of an art gallery.

The interior of the upper floor houses an open waiting area and ceremonial spaces of various sizes. Natural light floods in through the entire wall of windows, creating a bright and serene environment for mourners to wait and reminisce. The design exudes a Zen-like atmosphere, providing a space for a farewell to life and marking the beginning of a new journey.

One of the design challenges faced in creating Remembrances in Light was the integration of cold metal frames, polished marble, and a wall engraved with horizontal lines and interweaving bricks. These elements come together with dimming lights from the bottom, resulting in a multifaceted and multidimensional vision in the space. This area can also be used as a large-scale farewell venue, where life beliefs and achievements can be displayed, honoring the memories of the departed.

Remembrances in Light was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The funeral home's unique approach to farewell spaces contributes to improving the quality of life and making the world a better place.
